Any member of the echinoderm class
Ophiuroidea. A brittle star resembles a
starfish, and has a small, central, rounded
body and long, flexible, spiny arms used for
walking. The small brittle-star Amphipholis
squamata is greyish, about 4.5 cm/2 in
across, and found on sea bottoms worldwide.
It broods its young, and its arms can be
luminous. About 2,000 species of
brittle-stars and basket-stars, whose arms
are tangled and root-like, are included in
this group.
